GREENVILLE, N.C. – Former East Carolina women's swimmer Bailie Monahan was recognized as one of 24 student-athletes with a 2015-16 American Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award the league announced Wednesday.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to a student-athlete in each American Athletic Conference-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades and performances, and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The conference's Academic Affairs Committee makes the selections.
"We are so proud of Bailie and all her accomplishments during her tenure at ECU," Pirate swimming and diving coach Rick Kobe said. "She is the true embodiment of a student-athlete and is very deserving such a prestigious honor."
Monahan was named to the Chancellor's List during each semester of the 2015-16 academic calendar, posting a perfect 4.0 GPA each term, while earning her undergraduate degree in education. She was named to the 2014-15 American All-Academic Team as a junior and is expected to be on the 2015-16 all-academic team when it is announced tomorrow.
A two-time American Athletic Conference event champion, Monahan captured the bronze medal in the 100 and 200-yard butterfly at the 2016 conference championship meet after winning the gold in the 200 the previous season. In 2015 she was also a member of The American champion 800-yard freestyle relay team. Monahan posted a total of eight top-3 finishes during her two American Athletic Conference championship meets and posted six NCAA Championship 'B' qualifying times.
