
ECU Returns To The Links At The Janney Invitational

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina University men's golf team returns to action on Monday at the Janney Invitational at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond.

The 14-team event hosted by VCU will get underway with 36-holes on Monday starting at 8:45 a.m., followed by 18-holes on Tuesday. In addition to ECU and VCU, the 2016 field includes Richmond, Boston College, West Virginia, Charlotte, George Washington, Virginia Tech, Maryland, James Madison, Old Dominion, Iowa State, UNC Greensboro and Radford.

The Pirates are coming off a 13th-place finish at Rod Myers Invitational a week ago. Junior Tim Conover was the team's top scorer with a total score of 1-under 215 (73-73-69), placing tied for 10th. Redshirt junior Jackson Spires fired a 73 on the final day for a total 224 (76-75-73). Freshman Logan Shuping completed his first collegiate tournament with a score 228 (80-75-73) while fellow rookies Patrick Stephenson (73-80-76) and Blake Taylor (75-81-76) carded a 229 and 232, respectively. Senior Jack Sides recorded three rounds of 78 for total of 234.
ECU will use the same five-man team in Richmond as it did in Durham last week. Conover remains in the No. 1 spot and will once again be joined by the aforementioned players with Shuping competing as an individual for the second consecutive tournament. The Pirates will be paired with players from Iowa State and Old Dominion.
A year ago, the Pirates finished in second-place at the tournament formerly known as the Janney VCU Shootout with a team total of 2-over-par 866, nine strokes behind tournament champion James Madison. ECU graduates Wes Conover, Al Dickens and George Kilgore combined to shoot 3-under-par with Spires carding a 6-over 222 and the younger Conover firing an 8-over 224.
