Pirate Soccer Drops Non-Conference Tilt To NC State, 2-0
September 08, 2016 | Soccer
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's soccer team suffered its third-straight loss in a 2-0 home defeat to NC State in non-conference action at Johnson Stadium on Thursday evening.
Senior striker Lana Spitler and sophomore midfielder Marianna Shurina each led the Pirates with two shots apiece, while redshirt freshman goalkeeper Caroline Jeffers made three saves. One of Spitler's two attempts hit the post on a shot that could have tied the match in the 55th minute.
NC State (5-2) won its fourth match in a row and held a 10-9 edge in total shots, as well as a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
THE GOALS
53rd Minute: The Wolfpack earned a free kick on a Pirate foul just under 10 yards off the near sideline and approximately 35 yards out where Hannah Keogh lined lofted a cross to the far post that found the foot of Tziarra King. King snuck behind ECU's back line and volleyed an uncontested shot into the back of the net for the first goal of the match.
90th Minute: Despite trying to kill the clock, clinging to a 1-0 lead, NC State found an opportunity in the Pirates' midfield, as Kia Rankin touched a pass in to Michaella van Maanen who settled, turned and fired a shot with her left foot from about 20 yards out on the near side of the field and arched a shot into high into the far left corner to seal the Wolfpack's 2-0 win with just 36 seconds left in regulation.
HEAD COACH ROB DONNENWIRTH QUOTE
"We have to defend free kicks better and those kinds of things. I thought Rachel Renfrow was one of our best players tonight. I thought she covered a lot of ground and her passing was great. I'm really happy to see how far she has come from her freshman year until now. The growth is unbelievable. I'm really proud of her."
