
Pirates Sweep Weekly American Swimming Awards

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The American Athletic Conference announced its weekly swimming and diving awards this afternoon with East Carolina junior John Myhre and senior Marion Abert being named Men's and Women's Swimmer-of-the-Week, respectively. It's Myhre's first weekly award of the season and Abert's second.

Myhre placed first in a pair of individual events and anchored two winning relay teams as East Carolina defeated UMBC over the weekend. The junior finished atop the podium in the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle with times of 45.48 and 1:39.85. He helped the Pirates capture the 400 freestyle relay (3:03.56) and the 200-yard medley relay (1:31.05) as well.

Abert won three individual events and aided in a first-place relay performance in the Pirates' 166.5-131.5 win over UMBC. The senior touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.41), 500-yard freestyle (5:00.72) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:10.99). In relays, Abert swam lead-off in the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team that covered the distance in 3:30.73. Â

East Carolina returns to competition Jan. 24-25 at the South Carolina Collegiate Invitational in Columbia. The two-day event begins Friday at 4 p.m.
