
Pirates Open Competition At SC Collegiate Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. --- The East Carolina swimming and diving teams collected four first-place finishes on day one of the South Carolina Collegiate Invitational which also included the host Gamecocks, UNCW, Queens and Wingate Friday at the Carolina Natatorium.
Junior John Myhre claimed ECU's lone victory on the men's side by touching first in the 100-yard freestyle (44.75). Senior Will Hicks narrowly missed capturing a second win for ECU as South Carolina's Nils Wich-Glasen beat him to the wall by 0.16 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
On the women's side, Julie Lajoie earned a pair of first-place finishes. She won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:04.35, finishing 1.40 seconds in front of South Carolina's Emily Cornell. She later posted a victory in the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.01) by more than three seconds ahead of the Gamecocks' Marissa Delgado (2:04.20).
Senior Marion Abert was victorious in the women's 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:53.74, more than seconds faster than the Gamecocks' Heather Merritt (4:56.28).
The ECU women lead UNCW 114-52, Wingate 118-43 and Queens 87-74, but trail South Carolina 110-56. The Pirate men lead UNCW 126-41, Wingate 131-33 and Queens 90-74, but are losing to the Gamecocks 110-57.
The meet resumes Saturday morning, Jan. 28, at 10 a.m. ET.
