GREENVILLE, N.C. – ECU welcomes No. 20 Wichita State and Memphis to Greenville this weekend for a pair of American Athletic Conference matches. The Pirates will take on the Shockers Friday at 4:30 p.m. before entertaining Memphis Sunday at 1 p.m.

Both matches are part of doubleheaders with the ECU basketball programs. The women open their season Friday night at 8 p.m. against USC Upstate while the men kick off their campaign Sunday at 5 p.m. versus Coppin State.

As the regular season winds down, the Pirates are in sole possession of fourth place in the AAC standings with a 9-5 record - one match behind Temple for third place.

The Shockers own the top spot on the conference table while the Tigers are tied with Tulane for 11th place. ECU picked up a pair of 3-1 victories over USF and UCF last weekend to improve to 5-1 against AAC opponents at home (11-4 overall).

Wichita State most recently recorded 3-0 victories over Connecticut and Temple while Memphis defeated the Owls in five sets before falling to the Huskies in five. In the season's earlier meetings, the Pirates lost to the Shockers 3-0 and swept Memphis.

The Book On Wichita State
Wichita State is the lone unbeaten team in the American Athletic Conference, entering the weekend with a 14-0 league mark and 22-3 overall record. Tabitha Brown and Abbie Lehman pace the offensive efforts for the Shockers with respective 3.65 and 3.60 kills per set averages. Lehman is also putting up 1.27 blocks per set. Giorgia Civita has been the top statistical defensive performer at 5.35 digs per set. As a team, Wichita State averages 14.52 kills, 13.63 assists, 0.93 aces, 17.27 digs and 2.59 blocks per set. The Shockers lead the AAC in every statistical category except for digs per set and aces per set.

Wichita State won the first-ever matchup between the programs in three sets earlier this season at Koch Arena.   Â

Scouting Memphis
Memphis carries a 9-17 overall record and 2-12 AAC mark into its Friday night match at Cincinnati. Tai Bierria leads the Tigers offensively to the tune of 2.68 kills per set while Alyssa Kronberg sports a team-best 4.06 digs per set average. As a unit, Memphis averages 12.01 kills, 11.37 assists, 1.21 aces, 15.65 digs and 2.22 blocks per set.Â

The Series: Memphis
Memphis leads the series over ECU 20-7. However, the Pirates have captured four of the last six meetings and are 4-3 against the Tigers since joining the American Conference. ECU downed Memphis in five sets the last time the teams faced off in Greenville back on Oct. 7, 2016.

Ashton Mares became the 11th player in program history to surpass 1,000 career digs ... Mares has recorded a double-double in three-straight matches … ECU is now 11-4 at home in 2017, including a 5-1 mark against AAC opponents … With six matches left in the regular season, the Pirates are two victories away from their first 20-win campaign since 2005 ... Head coach Julie Torbett became the winningest head coach in program history with the 3-1 triumph over USF ... The weekend sweep of USF and UCF marked the third time ECU has won both of its matches in a conference weekend this season ... The Pirates rank in the top of the half of the league statistically in hitting percentage, opposing hitting percentage, kills per set and assists per set ...
