Pirates Win Second Straight Match

Durham, N.C. – East Carolina improved to 2-1 on the season with a 6-1 road win over North Carolina Central Friday afternoon. The Pirates won the doubles point and then won five of six singles matches en route to their second straight win.

Lisa Hofbauer and Celia Ruiz started things off for ECU with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles. Maria Gomez and Nastja Rettich defeated Jasmine Gabriel and Lynsey Cover 6-4 to clinch the doubles point. Michelle Castro and Maria Storozheva led 5-3 at No. 3 doubles when the point was claimed and doubles play was halted.

In singles action, East Carolina cruised to victory. The Pirates won at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles in straight sets. Storozheva was the only Pirate to lose in singles play falling to NCCU's Cover 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot. Rettich and Sarah Sarjoo also claimed two-set victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles for the 6-1 win.

The win gives the Pirates their first 2-1 start since the 2014-15 season. East Carolina returns to action Saturday at Davidson. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
