Pirates Defeat UNC Greensboro at Home

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina snapped a two-match losing streak with a 5-2 win over UNC Greensboro Saturday afternoon. The Pirates improve to 3-3 on the season and return to action Friday when they host Coastal Carolina at 1 p.m.

Wins at No.1 and No. 3 doubles gave ECU a 1-0 lead. Lisa Hofbauer and Celia Ruiz defeated Alice Taylor and Yasmin Franco 6-1 while Michelle Castro and Annija Veinsteina beat Corrine Blythe and Sarah Swiderski, 6-3. Masey DeMoss and Nancy Bridges handed the Pirates their only loss of doubles when they defeated Maria Gomez and Nastja Rettich 6-4 at the No. 2 spot.

Sarah Sarjoo gave the Purple and Gold a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles. Rettich put the Pirates within one point of clinching the win with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Franco. Swiderski's 6-3, 6-4 win over Hofbauer at No. 2 singles then gave the Spartans their first point of the match but Ruiz's 6-3, 6-3 win at the top of the lineup secured the Pirates win. Castro won in three sets at No. 5 singles for a 5-1 ECU lead and Veinsteina lost in a three-set thriller to DeMoss concluding the match.
