Women’s Tennis Loses to VCU 5-2
February 25, 2017 | Women's Tennis
Richmond, Va. – East Carolina lost its second match in as many days Saturday afternoon with a 5-2 loss to VCU (8-2). Michelle Castro won both her doubles and singles matches for the Pirates.
Â
ECU won the doubles point when the No. 2 duo of Maria Gomez and Nastja Rettich outworked Darya Berezhnaya and Noumea Witmus, 6-3 while Castro paired with Annija Veinsteina to beat Magda Aubets and Gabriela Araujo, 7-6, at the bottom of the lineup.
Â
With a 1-0 match lead for the Purple and Gold heading into singles play, the Pirates needed to win just three singles matches to claim the victory. The Rams had other plans however, winning five-of-six singles matches to earn their eighth win of the season.
Â
Castro won the Pirates' only singles match, avoiding a sweep for VCU, with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Araujo.
Â
The Purple and Gold looks to improve upon its 1-4 road record Thursday when it heads to South Carolina State. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. in Orangeburg, S.C.
