ECU Earns First Win of Spring Campaign

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina earned its first win of the season with a 7-0 sweep of Appalachian State (1-4) at home Saturday. The Pirates improve to 1-1 overall and will have a week's rest before returning to action at North Carolina Central February 10.

The Purple and Gold took a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Celia Ruiz and Lisa Hofbauer defeated Gabrielle Wreder and Megan Mullen 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Maria Gomez and Nastja Rettich beat Heidi Swope and McKayla Zupan, 6-0, to clinch the point.

The Pirates went on to sweep singles for the win. Ruiz defeated Rebecca Morse 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Hofbauer improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-1, 7-6 win over Wreder at No. 2 singles. A 6-3, 6-2 win for Michelle Castro over Swope clinched the victory for ECU with a 4-0 match lead.

Maria Storozheva, Rettich and Sarah Sarjoo all won their singles matches in straight sets at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively.
