Sarjoo Clinches Pirates’ Win in Three-Set Thriller

Charleston, S.C. – East Carolina (5-5) edged College of Charleston (5-3), 4-3, at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Place Friday afternoon. Sarah Sarjoo clinched the Purple and Gold's win with a three-set victory over Rachel McNeely, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. East Carolina returns to action to face No. 3 North Carolina (14-1) Saturday at 10 a.m.

Celia Ruiz and Lisa Hofbauer shut out Liza Fieldsend and McNeely, 6-0, at No. 1 doubles to start things off. Maria Gomez and Nastja Rettich paired for a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles while Michelle Castro and Annija Veinsteina beat Sarah Jane Jones and Sarah Zschunke 7-5 at the bottom of the lineup to sweep doubles and win the point.

Argyriou beat Veinsteina, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3 singles to even the match 1-1 but Hofbauer answered for the Pirates putting them ahead 2-1 with a win over Christi Woodson with consecutive 6-4 sets.

Rettich put the Pirates one point away from clinching victory with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles but the Cougars quickly evened things up with wins at No. 1 and No. 5.

With the matched tied 3-3 Sarjoo and McNeely entered a third set after spitting the first two 6-1, 3-6. McNeely took the early lead in set three but Sarjoo battled back to win 6-4 securing the Pirates' fifth victory of the season.

East Carolina continues its seven-match road stretch at 10 a.m. against North Carolina.
