Ruiz Upsets No. 24 Aney but Pirates Fall to No. 3 Tar Heels 5-2

Charleston, S.C. – Celia Ruiz earned her first win over a Top-25 opponent of the season with a 6-2, 7-5 win over No. 24 Jessie Aney in East Carolina's 5-2 loss to third-ranked North Carolina Saturday morning. The Pirates fall one match below .500 (5-6) while the Tar Heels improve to 15-1 on the season.

UNC claimed the doubles point when Chloe Ouellet-Pizer and Rachael James-Baker paired to defeat Maria Gomez and Nastja Rettich, 6-1, while Cassandra Vazquez and Alexa Graham beat Maria Storozheva and Annija Veinsteina, 6-3, at the bottom of the lineup. East Carolina's Ruiz and Lisa Hofbauer led 5-4 at the top of the doubles lineup when play was ceased.

Ruiz was one of two Pirates to earn a singles win in the loss. Rettich won her opening set, 7-6, at No. 5 singles before Vazquez evened things with a 6-3 set two win but Rettich claimed the victory with a 10-6 win in the third set.

Hofbauer was defeated at No. 2 singles by No. 33 Graham and Veinsteina lost to No. 78 Makenna Jones. Sarjoo and Storozheva both lost their singles matches at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively.
