GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina men's and women's track and field teams officially open their outdoor campaigns this weekend, making the trip over to Chapel Hill for the Dennis Craddock Carolina Relays. The meet is set for March 17-18 at the Irwin Belk Track at Fetzer Field.
Â
Seven college teams, as well as more than 27 high school squads, will participate in the meet. Campbell, East Carolina, Manhattan, North Carolina Central, NC State and UNC Wilmington are all scheduled to compete. ECU will send 55 athletes to the event – 35 women and 20 men.
Â
"Both teams are very excited to kick off the outdoor season this weekend," head coach Curt Kraft said. "The key word for this weekend is transitional. We are now going into a completely different season. There are so many different factors that impact outdoor track and field compared to indoor track and field. There are more events and obviously different events. We are excited to get some races under our belts, and use this first meet is a measuring stick."
Â
The Pirates return 12 members of the team who qualified for last year's NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville, Fla.

East Carolina looks to follow up last year's successful outdoor campaign when the women placed fourth and the men fifth at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships. The Pirates lost some great talent from last season's roster, including All-America high jumper Avion Jones, but the chance for some hardware still remains as ECU produced multiple podium finishes in Orlando.
Â
Following this weekend's meet in Chapel Hill, the Pirates head to NC State for the Raleigh Relays March 24-25.
