GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina men's and women's track and field teams will make their runs at conference titles this weekend at the 2017 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships. The meet is scheduled for May 12-14 at the Carl Lewis Complex in Houston, Texas.
Â
The American Digital Network will provide live and on-demand coverage of the 2017 Outdoor Track and Field Championships beginning at Noon ET/11 a.m. CT on Friday, May 12.
Â
ECU looks to improve on its showing at last year's outdoor championships when the women finished in fourth place and the men in fifth place.
Â
"Both teams are very excited and prepared to compete at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships," head coach Curt Kraft said. "We have many goals that we would like to accomplish this weekend. Probably the single biggest goal we have for both teams is to move up and improve on our team standings from the indoor season. These last two weeks have been very productive on both an academic and athletic side. Both teams have had great practices and have also had a chance to spend quality time on their final exams."
Â
Sophomore Stefano Migliorati enters the event as the favorite in the 800-meter run as he holds a season-best and school-record time of 1:48.68. Junior D'Ante Yarborough is also a contender in the 110-meter hurdles with a current league second-best time of 14.21 set at the Florida Relays. In the discus, senior Adam Manns ranks among the favorites as he is second on the conference performance list with a mark of 55.04 meters.
Â
On the women's side, sophomore Courtney Warner has a chance for a gold medal in the 100-meter dash, currently sitting second in the event among league competitors with a school-record time of 11.44. The Pirates will have a chance to score well in the 100-meter hurdles, boasting the second and third-fastest times in the conference in senior Cheyenne Hutchinson (13.47) and freshman Alyssa Sandy (13.67). In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Grace Sullivan ranks third on the AAC performance list with a time of 10:31.91.
Â
Last year in Orlando, now departed seniors Avion Jones and Raqurra Ishmar won conference titles in the high jump and discus respectively.
Â
"The conference championship meet is obviously the meet that you want your teams to peak and have their best meets of the year," Kraft added. As a coaching staff, we have all the faith in the world in our teams that they will compete their hearts out at this meet. It would not surprise me at all if we didn't come out with numerous conference champions and many more NCAA East Regional qualifiers. Regardless of the outcome, one of the things that will always remain consistent is that we are very proud of these teams."
