
Ghaffar Grabs Heptathlon Silver At AAC Outdoor Championships

HOUSTON, Texas – The East Carolina men's and women's track and field teams enjoyed a productive day two at the 2017 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, moving within striking distance of the team titles at the Carl Lewis International Complex on the campus of the University of Houston.

With one day to go, the men are in third place just 10 points back of leader Connecticut while the women are also in third – trailing Cincinnati by a nine-point margin.

Senior Aminah Ghaffar won the silver medal in the heptathlon with a total score of 4,839 points while sophomore Kristen Stephens placed sixth with 4,347 points. The Pirates scored third and fourth place finishes in the long jump as seniors Cheyenne Hutchinson and Brittany Bryant turned in marks of 6.22 and 6.05 meters respectively. In the javelin, senior Lauren Lubarski captured third place to secure a spot on the podium with a mark of 48.16 meters.

In the men's competition, senior Adam Manns took third place in the shot put by putting up a mark of 17.66 meters to earn the bronze medal and all-conference honors.

On the track, a total of eight ECU runners qualified for Sunday's finals in the women's 100-meter hurdles, men's 110-meter hurdles, men's 1,500-meter run, men's 400-meter dash and women's 100-meter dash.

The third and final day of the outdoor conference championships gets underway at 3 p.m. EDT with the women's high jump.
