GREENVILLE, N.C. – The NCAA has honored the East Carolina women's golf and softball teams for their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR), which ranked in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sport, according to a recent announcement by the organization.
Â
Both teams earned a perfect score of 1,000 for the 2015-16 academic year.
Â
The NCAA announced the public recognition as part of the overall Division I academic reform effort that is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their sport.
Â
"It is a wonderful statement on behalf our program to receive a perfect APR score back-to-back years," women's golf head coach Kevin Williams said. "We are fortunate to have such high-achieving student-athletes in our program and our support staff within our athletic department is so diligent in their efforts to enhance each student-athlete's experience as both a student and an athlete."
Â
This year's recognition marks the third time in program history the women's golf team has been cited for its academic achievement following designation after the 2004-05 and 2014-15 academic years.
Â
The softball team was honored for the first time since 2009-10 and was the only softball program in the American Athletic Conference and one of 38 softball teams in Division I to achieve a perfect APR score for 2015-16.
Â
"It is a pleasure to have kids on our team who put in the extra work to make academics a priority," softball head coach Courtney Oliver said. "It couldn't be done without our academic support staff here at ECU. They go above and beyond and it is evident through this award."
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention as well as graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
