Summer Sessions: Raquan Wilkins
August 07, 2017 | Men's Basketball
SEASON RECAP
Wilkins spent his freshman season as a reserve, averaging 7.8 minutes per contest in 27 games played. He scored double figures in two games, netting 12 in his only start of the year at Charlotte and 10 against Presbyterian in addition to grabbing seven rebounds, falling three boards shy of his first double-double. He played more than 10 minutes in eight of 13 non-conference games, but only once during league play.

On Wilkins' freshman season
He didn't play as much as he would've like. We always knew he was a good on the ball defender, excellent off the ball too. Defensively he's a lockdown guy. He likes playing defense. He's physical. He's got size for his position. Offensively we need him to be more consistent where he can make an outside shot and get to the foul line. He handles the ball pretty well. He just needs to play a little bit more, but he can play all over the floor. The one thing that we always liked about Raquan was his ability to defend and defend multiple positions.
Â
On areas he needs to improve
He needs to become more consistent shooting the basketball from the perimeter. That's going to be his big thing. He's got to be able to knock down perimeter jump shots. People don't respect that from him at this point so once he can do that it'll open up a lot of stuff. He can really take the ball to the basket. He's a really good offensive rebounder for his position. He's gotten much more physical too and I think the growth in him needs to be from a maturity standpoint; that growth has to be mentally from his freshman year to his sophomore year. He's been through a year that he didn't play as much and that's hard for kids, but he worked his way through it. He's excited about this year and the challenges ahead and what he can do to get himself on the floor more this year.
