GREENVILLE, N.C. – The ECU women's basketball team (11-10, 3-5) will host Wichita State (10-12, 5-3) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. (EST) inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. The American Athletic Conference matchup will be streamed live on the American Digital Network.
As part of National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebrations, ECU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will welcome nearly 100 local Pitt County Boys & Girls Club members for a pregame skills-clinic. Members of ECU's women's sports teams will help teach local youth skills needed to be successful in sports.
ECU is coming off a 79-70 win at Cincinnati, which marked the team's first AAC road win of the season. The Pirates battled back from being down by 10 points with 2:37 left in the third quarter to force an overtime period. The purple and gold would outscore the Bearcats 11-2 in the extra frame to secure the road win. ECU is now 2-2 in overtime games and is 8-5 this season when the final score margin is under 10.
Freshman Ariyana Williams is averaging an ECU team-best 10.3 points per game. Senior Thais Oliveira is second on the team in scoring with 9.2 points per contest. In conference play, junior Salita Greene is averaging 7.8 points and a team-high 6.8 rebounds per game. In AAC play Junior Alex Frazier is averaging 7.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. Frazier joins sophomore Dominque Claytor as the only two Pirates to start all eight conference games.
Freshman Necole Hope was selected to the AAC weekly honor roll on Jan. 22 after posting a career-high 18 points and converting the game-winning layup in ECU's 80-78 win versus Houston this past Saturday.
The Shockers came into conference play with a 5-9 record, but have now won five-straight AAC contests. Wichita State is led by redshirt-senior Rangie Bessard who averages team-highs of 18.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Fellow redshirt-senior Diamond Lockhart is second on the team in scoring at 10.7 points per game. Bessard and Lockhart are the only two Shockers to start all 22 games. Wichita State leads the AAC in free throw percentage at 77 percent.
The Pirates and Shockers have never met in program's respective histories. First-year Wichita State head coach Keitha Adams has faced ECU nine times, with a 5-4 record over ECU, while the head coach at UTEP for 16 seasons. Heather Macy was 0-4 against UTEP during those years.
