ECU HEAD COACH JOE DOOLEY
The American Coaches' Roundtable
On the differences between his first tenure at ECU to now
"There are several differences. Obviously the commitment from the chancellor and the Board of Trustees and our administration to get basketball where it's important at East Carolina, I think that's a big deal. The league is a big change. It's a big boy league. We talk to our guys about that all the time. We need to recruit that way. I'm very competitive. We've played against all three of these coaches the last couple of years. We played Wichita State and Rhode Island last year at Florida Gulf Coast; we scrimmaged Johnny at Central Florida. These are real guys and real teams."
On getting the players to buy into playing defense
"It's an ability and a mindset, but it also allows you to play faster offensively. If you rebound the ball it's a lot easier to run on fast breaks off of misses than it is off made baskets. We've talked about being gritty. We've talked about getting tougher and having a little edge. We've told our guys, act like a captain, play like a pirate and have a little edge."
On 2018 American Rookie-of-the-Year Shawn Williams
"He's had a great preseason. He's worked hard to diversify his game a little more. Everybody is going to try to chase him off the 3-point line. He's done a better job of creating for others. We only have two upperclassmen in our program, so we've talked to him about leadership. This is a league you need to get old and stay old and we're not old. We need to get old and stay old, but we've talked to him about leadership going forward and how he can improve his game."
On the differences between the league he previously coached in at ECU as to in The American now
"Facilities and resources and now you can sell the league. When you bring recruits in, you can show them the banners of the teams in league, what you're competing against and who you're competing against. I think we have 20-plus NBA players from our league currently. Those are things you can sell. You can sell a multiple-bid league, you can sell great programs, great travel and an opportunity to be on TV."
On what a player must do in order to be a part of the Pirates' program
"Be accountable for his actions, on the court and off the court… [Want to] be a part of building something. I think that's a real nice idea that you can try to sell to guys."
