ECU Sweeps Dual Meet With UNCW
October 27, 2018 | Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving, Swimming & Diving
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The ECU swimming and diving teams posted their fifth straight dual meet sweep of UNCW Saturday at Seahawk Natatorium.
Â
The ECU women's team registered a 173-127 decision to improve to 2-1 and earn their 13th consecutive win over the rival Seahawks. The men's squad also improved to 2-1 this season with a 172.5-120.5 victory for their fifth straight series victory.
Â
"We are very pleased with the outcome," ECU Head Coach Matthew Jabs said. "This meet was a little different than our others. We had to get up early drive down to UNCW and compete right off the bus. That's not the easiest thing to do, especially with a young team. It was also nice to have the divers back with us. Last meet they didn't get a chance to compete since our opponent did not have any divers. It was nice to be back together as a team."Â
Â
Victoria Gillet, Catherine Johnson, Shannon Stott, Mariana Vignoli and Lily West were multi-event winners for the ladies' team. Gillet took first-place in the 200 butterfly (2:05.64) and the 400 individual medley (4:35.74). Johnson swept the sprint freestyle events, winning the 50 (23.84) and 100 (51.89), while Vignoli won the two distance freestyle races outdistancing the field in the 500 (5:04.73) and 1000 (10:20.85). West touched first in both breaststroke events, finishing the 100 with a mark of 1:05.24 and the 200 in a time of 2:21.33. Stott was victorious in the 200 freestyle (1:54.62) and 100 butterfly (57.59).
Â
ECU swept the remaining backstroke events with Kathryn Morrison winning the 100 (59.26) and Sophie McNeil capturing the 200 (2:09.41).
Â
Morrison, Stott and Johnson along with Karen Wasserman took first in the women's 200 medley relay.
Â
Freshman Marek Osina won three events to pace the men's team. He claimed the 200 butterfly (1:52.66), 200 backstroke (1:50.28) and 400 individual medley (3:59.78). He also swam leadoff for the victorious 200 medley relay team (1:31.58) joined by Jacek Arentewicz, Gustavo Santos and Gavin Erdmann.
Â
Arentewicz won a pair of individual events, placing first in the 100 (55.53) and 200 (2:01.50) breaststroke with Ethan Knorr and Blaz Demsar each picking up a win. Knorr captured first-place in the 1000 freestyle (9:36.47) and Demsar won the 500 freestyle (4:40.89).
Â
The Pirates swept the men's diving events with Luke Stivers earning the win on the 1-meter springboard (289.70) and Devin Nugent was triumphant on the 3-meter (296.55).
ECU heads to Buies Creek Nov. 3 for a swimming-only meet against Campbell and Lenoir-Rhyne, while the diving team will host Richmond and Duke the same day.
