Hofbaur, Diercksen Win Doubles Title At Robert Allison Fall Classic

Tuscaloosa, Ala. – Playing at a pair of tournaments over the weekend, the ECU women's tennis team claimed a doubles title at the Roberta Allison Fall Classic as well as competing at the Coastal Carolina Invite.

Lisa Hofbauer and Alisa Diercksen represented ECU at the Roberta Allison Fall Classic, the second straight weekend the pair of Pirate had competed. Along with playing singles, Hofbauer and Diercksen partnered to compete in the Jill Breslin Doubles Draw. The pair went 4-2 as a duo last year, but it was the first time they had paired together this fall. The pair opened the tournament matched up with No. 3 seed Aspasia Avgeri and Marija Jovcic from DePaul and advanced with a 6-2 win. Next up was No. 2 seed Moka Ito and Jacqueline Pelletier of host Alabama, with the Pirates winning 6-2 once again.

In the final, Hofbauer and Diercksen met the top seed in the draw, Nikola Kohoutova and Alexandria Stiteler of South Alabama. With the draw title on the line, Hofbauer and Diercksen cruised to a 6-3 victory, earning ECU its first title of the fall season.

In singles, Diercksen nearly added a second title to her tally. The sophomore from Hamburg, Germany defeated both Aspasia Avgeri of DePaul (2-6, 6-1, 1-0 [10-5]) and Jacqueline Pelletier of Alabama (7-5, 6-4) to advance to the final of the Heather Geros Singles Draw. Unfortunately, Diercksen's run came to an end against Air Force's Kristin Kerrigan, falling 7-6 (3), 7-5.

At the Coastal Carolina Invite, ECU matched up with Coastal Carolina, UNC Greensboro and Campbell in both singles and doubles. In singles, Nastja Rettich went 3-0 to lead ECU over the weekend. Rettich is now 7-2 so far this season. Also picking up a win each was Minette Van Vreden, Martina Paladini-Jennings and Hsia Ho Chiao.

In doubles, Paladini-Jennings paired with Van Vreden to win one match, as did the duo of Rettich and Chiao.

ECU returns to action next weekend with another pair of tournaments. The Pirates will compete in both the Kitty Harrison Invitational, hosted by North Carolina, and the Bulldog Classic, hosted by Georgia. Both tournaments get underway on Friday, Nov. 2.
