
ECU Falls In Three At No. 22 UCF

ORLANDO, Fla. – ECU closed its weekend with a 3-0 (17-25, 16-25, 23-25) loss to No. 22 UCF in Orlando.

Sophomores Bri Wood and Sydney Kleinman led the Pirates (12-14, 4-11 AAC) with eight kills each while Wood collected a team-high 10 digs. Briana Garcia notched 12 kills for the Knights (24-3, 15-0 AAC) and Jordan Pingel notched 12 digs.
With 27 assists, sophomore setter Shelby Martin moved into ninth place on the program career chart with 1,482 assists.

UCF out-hit ECU .340 to .198 as well as holding advantages in digs (48-43) and total blocks (5.5-3.0).

After ECU grabbed an early two-point lead to start the match, UCF went on a run and pulled ahead 11-6. After a Pirate timeout, Osuegbu came up with a solo block and ECU eventually cut the deficit to 16-14 after an attacking error. The Knights held firm and took the first set by eight.

UCF put together a big run in the middle of the second set to take a 2-0 match lead into the intermission. The Pirates, looking to force a fourth frame, assumed a 6-4 cushion after a kill by Wood. With ECU leading 11-9, the Knights scored three straight to gain the upper hand. The teams settled for a tie at 18 before UCF netted two straight to reach 20. After the Knights reached match point at 24-22, Kleinman kept ECU alive with a kill, but Kristina Fisher put down a kill of her own to end the contest.

The Pirates return home Friday for an American Athletic Conference match against Memphis.
