GREENVILLE, N.C. – Less than 48 hours after withstanding a late run by Texas-Rio Grande Valley, ECU returns to the court inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum as the Pirates host Prairie View A&M Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in their final game of the Deep South Showcase.
ECU enters the game with a record of 3-2 after defeating UTRGV, 69-64, Monday night. Freshman Jayden Gardner led the Pirates with 15 points, while junior Seth LeDay and freshman Tyler Foster came off the bench to added 12 and 11 points respectively.
The Pirates built a 19-point first half, but saw its comfortable margin reduced to four with nine minutes remaining in regulation. Gardner scored nine points in final seven minutes to help hold the Vaqueros at bay. Isaac Fleming them made 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory.
Prairie View also played on Monday night, but came out on the wrong side of the scoreboard falling at UNCG, 74-68. Four players scored in double figures for the Panthers led by Gary Blackston's 18. Darius Williams came off the bench to score 15, and Taishaun Johnson and Devonte Patterson each scored 11 points.
Blackston leads the team with 17.8 points per game.
"We watched Prairie View play against Rio Grande Valley the other night so we had a little bit of a feel for them," ECU Head Coach Joe Dooley. "They pressure you, they have a lot of guards that shoot a lot of jump shots; very aggressively offensively."
The Panthers are in the midst of a four-game losing streak after opening the season with a victory over Santa Clara on the west coast.
