Pirates Sign Two High School Prospects For 2019-20

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The ECU men's golf team has signed prep prospects Christopher Sperrazza (Raleigh, N.C.) and Jacob Calamaro (Johns Creek, Ga.) to a National Letter of Intent for the 2019-20 season, head coach Andrew Sapp announced Tuesday.
Sperrazza will join the Pirates from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, as the sixth-ranked golfer in the in the Tar Heel Youth Golf Association Boy's Junior rankings. He was named to the 2018 News & Observer All-Metro Team and earned all-conference accolades each of his first three seasons.
"Chris is an extremely talented golfer who has shown tremendous improvement over the past year," Sapp said. "He has some high finishes in big tournaments and is one of the best players in North Carolina for the class of 2019. We know his experience and work ethic will help him continue to grow as he comes to Greenville next fall and we are excited to have him join Pirate Nation."
Sperrazza placed seventh the 2018 North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A Championships as junior, one of 11 Top-10 finishes during his prep career. He earned medalist honors at the eighth-annual Wolfpack Junior Championships and finished tied for third at the 69th Annual Carolina Junior Boy's Championships.
"It was easy to be impressed with the campus and facilities during my visit to ECU, but what really made me want to be a Pirate was the golf program and culture Coach Sapp and Coach Ruyle are building," Sperrazza said. "I knew from that moment I wanted to be part of their golf program."
Calamaro, a senior at John Creek High School in Georgia, has been a member of two state championships in two different states during his three-year high school career. As a freshman he helped Radnor High School win the 2015 Pennsylvania 3A state title before moving to Georgia and becoming part of Johns Creek's 2017 6A state championship team.
"Jake knows what winning in team golf is all about," Sapp stated. "We look forward to Jake bringing that energy and experience with him to ECU and helping us win team championships. He has the passion and drive that will help him continue to improve throughout his senior year and on into college. We are excited Jake chose to become a Pirate."
As a junior, he claimed medalist honors at the 2017 Northern Virginia Junior Open and also competed in that year's U.S. Junior Amateur. Calamaro earned a second-place finish at the 2017 Fenton Cup and placed seventh in American Junior Golf Association Juniors at the Legends, Webb Simpson Challenge and Southeastern Junior Golf Tour's Callaway Gardens Junior Classic.
"In choosing a college I wanted to go somewhere where I felt like not only that I fit, but also where I believed I would get better. Between the facilities, and coaches, and the school itself I felt that ECU would be my very best opportunity to improve upon my game and enjoy my college experience."
ECU will resume its 2018-19 season on Feb. 4, 2019 at the Sea Best Invitational at TPC Sawgrass Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
