Pirates Edged By High Point
November 24, 2018 | Men's Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Despite having multiple chances to take the lead in the final minutes, ECU was unable to overtake High Point and fell to cross-state foe 55-52 inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum Saturday.
The Panthers, who won 2 of 3 at the Bimini Jam in the Bahamas, improved to 3-3 on the season after opening the season 0-2. The Pirates had their two-game winning streak snapped and are 4-3.
HPU Head Coach Tubby Smith became the 100th coach in NCAA history to reach the milestone and now ranks 15th among all active Division I coaches.
Junior Jahaad Proctor was the only Panther to reach double figures, scoring a game—high 20 points. Fellow juniors Jamaal Wright and Bradonn Kamaga added nine points apiece for HPU.
ECU freshman Jayden Gardner led ECU in scoring for the fifth consecutive game, netting 18 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field and 10-of-12 at the free throw line. Sophomore Shawn Williams finished with 11 points.
High Point led by 10, 43-33, midway through the second half but ECU put together an 14-5 run to pull within one with 3:39 remaining on a pair of free throw by Gardner. The two teams exchanged baskets over the next two minutes and HPU held a three-point lead with 41 seconds to play.
Needing a basket on its next possession, ECU turned the ball over and Proctor consequently made 1-of-2 free throws for a four-point Panthers' lead with 19 ticks left which was answered by 1-of-2 charity stripe makes by Gardner.
The Pirates then fouled Jordan Whitehead with 17 seconds to play. He missed both free throws leaving the door open for ECU to send the game into overtime.
However, ECU was unable to get a good look at 3-point shot and the Panthers held on for victory.
"It was really frustrating," Gardner said. "We got it from three to one and then from three to one, and we just couldn't take the lead."
High Point won the battle of the boards, 32-27, including an 11-4 edge on the offensive glass. The Panthers also took better care of the ball, committing just nine turnovers compared to ECU's 13.
"I thought we never really got on track," ECU Head Coach Joe Dooley said. "They had control of the game throughout. I thought they were more physical than us, which was disappointing."
ECU returns to action Tuesday, Nov. 27, at instate rival UNCW.
