Gameday: ECU Returns To Action Following Exam Break At Charlotte
December 17, 2018 | Men's Basketball
CHARLOTTE --- ECU returns to action following the conclusion of final exams Tuesday night against cross-state rival Charlotte at 7:30 p.m. inside Halton Arena on the campus of UNC Charlotte. It'll be the Pirates' first game since posting a 70-47 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore on December 2.
The Pirates enter the game with an overall record of 6-4 with two straight victories and will be looking for their first three-game winning streak since December 2017, which coincidentally was halted by the 49ers in Greenville.
ECU led Charlotte by five at halftime inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum a year ago, but were out-scored 43-19 in the second half as the 49ers defeated the Pirates for the second straight season, 69-50. ECU shot just 28.1 percent in the second half, while Charlotte converted 51.4 percent of its second half attempts.
The 49ers' Adrien White poured in 30 points and Milos Supica posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Isaac Fleming led ECU with 14 points, while Kentrell Barkley added 11 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Charlotte leads the overall series 17-8 and has won 10 in a row in the Queen City, including a 76-64 decision in the Pirates' last visit in 2016. Sophomore Jon Davis scored 24 points to lead the 49ers.
Davis in the only player on the 49ers to average double figures points per game this season, 20.4 ppg, and ranks third overall in Conference USA. Malik Martin is second on the team with 9.3 ppg. As a team, Charlotte is averaging 59.0 ppg and shooting 39.8 percent from the field.
The 49ers have lost three in a row entering the game and own a 2-5 overall record with both of their victories coming at home.
ECU is 6-2 at home this season, but is 0-2 on the road with losses at Georgia Tech and UNCW.
Freshman Jayden Gardner leads The American in scoring (19.0 ppg) and ranks second in rebounding (8.6). He has led the Pirates in scoring each of the last eight games with five games scoring 20 or more points. Junior Seth LeDay ranks third in the conference in rebounding (7.5) and has posted double digit points in eight games with a career-best 21 against James Madison.
Sophomore Shawn Williams averages 13.2 ppg for the Pirates, which score approximately 73 points per contest and shoot 44.3 percent from the field.
