GREENVILLE, N.C. – For the first time in two weeks, the ECU women's basketball team will play inside Minges Coliseum as the Pirates host UNC Wilmington on Sunday afternoon.
Â
ECU (9-3) has been a different team when playing at home rather than playing on the road. The Pirates have a perfect 7-0 record in the friendly confines of Minges Coliseum, but a 0-3 record on the road, including an 83-66 loss at Duke on Friday night. ECU has shot 40.9% from the field and averages 69.0 points during home games, but those averages drop to 30.5% and 51.7 points in road games. The Pirates have also struggled on the boards on the road, getting outrebounded by 20.3 boards per game, versus having a rebounding margin of -2.4 at home. The last time ECU won its first seven home games was during the 2013-14 season, when the Pirates won their first 11 games in Minges Coliseum.
Â
Raven Johnson (13.6 ppg) and Lashonda Monk (12.1 ppg) are the top two scorers for ECU. Both players have been better at home, with Johnson averaging 15.7 points at home and Monk averaging 15.0 points. Johnson is also the team's top rebounder, pulling in 6.6 rebounds per game. Monk has a team-high 40 assists and 46 steals. Her average of 3.83 steals per game leads the AAC and is seventh in the nation. When either of the pair scores in double figures, ECU is 9-2 and the Pirates are 4-0 when both score at least 10 points.
Â
Wilmington (6-4) will have had a nine-day layoff when the Seahawks arrive in Greenville. Wilmington last beat Longwood 35-33 to snap a two-game losing streak. Like ECU, Wilmington has been much better at home, going 5-0 there and 1-4 on the road. Shrita Parker leads the Seahawks in scoring, with an average of 18.1 points per game as well as in assists with 36. Gigi Smith is also scoring in double-figures for Wilmington (14.9 ppg). Like ECU, Wilmington has a positive turnover margin (+6.3) and a negative rebounding margin (-3.6). Wilmington outscores opponents 34.3 ppg to 32.4 ppg in the second half.
Â
ECU holds a 30-22 advantage in the all-time series between the two schools and this will be the third straight season the programs have met. Last season, Wilmington claimed a 66-62 home win while in 2016, ECU won 75-65 in Greenville. Since ECU left the CAA, the Pirates are 5-5 against the Seahawks. ECU is 17-9 at home against Wilmington. Debbie Freeman set the ECU single-game rebounding record by grabbing 26 boards against Wilmington in 1977.
