GREENVILLE, N.C. – With the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships just weeks away, the ECU track and field program heads to Pennsylvania this weekend for the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup on the campus of Penn State University. The two-day event is slated for Feb. 2-3 at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.
Â
The meet is scheduled to kick off Friday at 5 p.m. with the women's weight throw event. It will conclude Saturday at approximately 2:55 p.m. with the running of the women's 4x400 relay.
Â
"We are at a point in our season where we should start seeing some major improvements with some of our marks," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "The meet we will be going to this weekend has always been an enjoyable meet. The last time we attended an indoor track meet at Penn State was back in 2015. They have a beautiful facility that is conducive to running fast times. We have had a good week of practice and we hope that will turn into positive results."
Â
The women's team checks in at No. 12 on this week's United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Southeast Region ranking, moving up one spot from last week.
Â
During its most recent meet, last weekend at the Liberty Kickoff, junior Ryan Davis established the league's best mark in the weight throw by recording a toss of 20.51 meters. It is currently the 23rd-best total in the nation and the fourth-longest heave in program history. As a result, he was named the AAC Male Field Athlete of the Week.
Â
On the current American Conference performance list, ECU has athletes in the top three of six events. The AAC Indoor Championships are scheduled for Feb. 23-24 in Birmingham, Ala.
