ECU held off Tulane in New Orleans on Valentine's Day without the services of leading rebounder and second-leading scorer Kentrell Barkley, who was suspended to due a failure to adhere to team rules. If the Pirates are to win consecutive games for the first time since December, they will have to do it without Barkley again.
The Pirates will look to knock off UConn at home for the second straight year and earn a season series split with the Huskies, who defeated ECU 70-65 in Hartford last month, Sunday at 3 p.m..
Senior B.J. Tyson nearly forced overtime at the XL Center, but his game-tying 3 was just off the mark and UConn secured the rebound and made a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining to ensure victory.
Tyson led the Pirates with 21 points against the Huskies and is coming off a 22-point performance at Tulane Wednesday night.
However, it was freshman Shawn Williams who lit up the scoreboard in New Orleans, scoring 29 points on 9-of-10 shooting, going 6-of-6 from beyond the arc and 5-of-5 at the free throw line.
He's scored double digits in a career long eight consecutive games, averaging 19.4 points per game and shooting nearly 48 percent (.477) outside the 3-point arc during that stretch, knocking down 31-of-65 3-point attempts.
Williams leads ECU in scoring in league play with 14.3 points per game, followed by Tyson (13.7 ppg), Barkley (12.0 ppg) and Isaac Fleming (10.8 ppg).
Fleming has scored double figures in six straight games, averaging 14.7 points per game and shooting 51.4 percent (36-70) from the field and 40.0 percent (8-20) from 3. He ranks second in The American with 4.8 assists per game and has dropped 116 dimes this season.

The Huskies are coming off a narrow 73-71 loss to Tulsa at the XL Center on Thursday night, losing their second-straight game in league play. Sophomore guard Christian Vital recorded his first double-double of the season with a 20-point, 10-rebound performance against the Golden Hurricane, but the Huskies fell in the final seconds after a missed layup at the buzzer by junior guard Jalen Adams.
Â
Adams (17.5 ppg) and Vital (14.8 ppg) rank one and two on the team in scoring with Vital leading the team in rebounding.
Â
A win over the Huskies would move the Pirates into a three-way tie for eighth-place in The American standings alongside UConn and SMU.
