ECU Dethroned By Cincinnati At The American Championships

DALLAS – ECU's three-year reign as American Athletic Conference Men's Swimming and Diving champion came to an end Saturday night as Cincinnati claimed the title and the Pirates finished as the runner-up.
The Bearcats racked up 906 points to win by 111 points over ECU, which scored 795. SMU finished third with 676 points and UConn placed fourth (641).
Houston (826) claimed the women's championship by a landslide margin of 163 points over second-place Cincinnati (663). ECU (552) finished in third-place followed by SMU (529), Tulane (401) and UConn (379).

PIRATES ON THE MEDAL STAND
- Sophomore Magnus Andersen earned the silver medal in the men's 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:44.48.
- Senior Tori Angermeier captured the bronze medal in the women's 100-yard freestyle, tying the ECU varsity record set by Jenna Stewart in 2011.
- Senior John Myhre (44.23) repeated as conference champion in the men's 100-yard freestyle, edging out Cincinnati's William Sigala (44.24) by 0.01 seconds. Junior Victor Martins claimed the bronze medal with time of 44.43.
- Senior Vendela Norrman finished third in the women's 200-yard breaststroke after earning gold in the event each of the previous two seasons.
- Freshman Jacek Arentewicz claimed his second gold medal of the championship meet, touching first in the men's 200-yard breaststroke with a meet and ECU varsity record time of 1:54.55.
- Senior Julie Lajoie won her first individual American Athletic Conference title by touching first in the women's 200-yard butterfly (1:59.14).
- Sophomore Gustavo Santos collected the bronze medal in the men's 200-yard butterfly.
- Freshman Devin Nugent finished second on the men's platform to earn the silver medal with a score of 251.00.
- Catherine Johnson, Bridie Burke, Logan Graumann and Angermeier combined to win the silver medal in the women's 400-yard freestyle relay.
- Victor Santos, Maxime Cadiat, Gavin Erdmann and Myhre teamed up to win gold in the men's 400-yard freestyle relay. Santos, Cadiat and Myhre were each part of The American championship 400 free relay squad last season.
UP NEXT
Several members of the men's and women's swimming and diving team posted NCAA provisional cuts and will await word for the NCAA to determine if they have qualified for inclusion into the 2018 national championship meet.
