GREENVILLE, N.C. - ECU continued its spring practice schedule with another full-pad workout on Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The two-hour outing also advanced preparation efforts for the Pirates' first formal scrimmage scheduled for Saturday.
Â
Head coach Scottie Montgomery, defensive coordinator David Blackwell and offensive coordinator Tony Petersen stressed tempo on both sides of the ball, most notably accelerating the action in each of the four team periods that ran a combined 34 minutes.
Â
In addition to featuring its usual run and pass packages, ECU conducted an unscripted segment implemented by design which forced both units to react to the element of surprise per the play call. The Pirates also worked on first-and-10 snaps during its devoted situational period.
Â
"We want to keep turning up the dial on our tempo," Montgomery said. "We changed some things around today having to with the pace, and while we got off to a fast start offensively, our defense was able to make the adjustment and catch up. Overall, we have quality competition out there and guys are battling hard."
Â
Sophomore quarterback Reid Herring enjoyed a sharp day, completing a combined 17-of-21 passes for 153 yards and a pair of touchdowns during the four team sessions. He connected with Deondre Farrier and Trevon Brown on 14 and 33-yard scoring tosses, respectively. On the ground, Hussein Howe led all rushers with 56 yards on 10 carries while Trace Christian added 40 yards on seven attempts.
Â
Defensively, the Pirates collectively racked up six stops behind the line of scrimmage, including two by Shaun James - one of which resulted in a safety.
Â
ECU will use a shortened Friday afternoon practice as a polish day before engaging in Saturday's contest.
Â
