GAMEDAY: No. 7 ECU and No. 10 SMU Meet In Round One of AAC Tournament

Uncasville, Conn. – After finishing the regular season 15-14 and 7-8 in American Athletic Conference play, the ECU women's basketball team will enter the AAC Tournament Saturday afternoon as the No. 7 seed. The Pirates will take on the tenth-seeded Mustangs of SMU (10-19, 4-12) at 2 p.m. inside the Mohegan Sun Arena and can be streamed on ESPN3.
The Purple and Gold are 2-3 in AAC tournament games. ECU was eliminated last year in the first round for the first time since joining the conference. The Mustangs defeated the Pirates 60-54 on March 3, 2017. The winner will advance to face No. 2 USF in the quarterfinals at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Freshman Ariyana Williams is averaging an ECU team-best 9.0 points per game. Senior Thais Oliveira is second on the team in scoring with 8.0 points and 5.6 rebounds per contest. Junior Salita Greene is the team's leading rebounder at 6.1 per game. In conference play, freshman Lashonda Monk is averaging a team-high of 9.2 points and a team-best 2.1 assists. Junior Alex Frazier is averaging 8.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and one assist in AAC play.
The Pirates are second in the American Athletic Conference in steals per game, averaging 11.1. The Pirates lead the conference in offensive rebounding with 434 on the season, an average of 15.5 per game.
The Mustangs enter the AAC tournament as the No. 10 seed. SMU is led by senior McKenzie Adams, who is averaging a team-best 16.6 points per game. Kiara Perry is tied as the team's leading rebounder with 6.6 per game and is second in scoring at 9.7 points per contest. After defeating Tulsa and Memphis in early February the Mustangs have dropped the last four regular-season games.
The Pirates lead the all-time series that dates back to 2006, 10-8. ECU and SMU split the season series. The Mustangs won game one 65-51 in Dallas, TX. on Jan. 13 and the Pirates won 76-47 at home on Feb. 3. The two teams have met three times in postseason play, splitting a pair of Conference USA Tournament games in 2007 and 2009 and most recently, SMU defeating the Pirates 60-54 on March 3, 2017.
