Nine-Run Eighth Lifts No. 18 ECU Over No. 20 UCF, 12-4
March 24, 2018 | Baseball
ORLANDO, Fla. – Jake Washer and Connor Litton each hit home runs highlighting No. 18 ECU's nine-run eighth inning, while Jake Agnos fanned five out of the bullpen in the Pirates 12-4 American Athletic Conference win over No. 20 UCF Saturday night at John Euliano Park. With the win the Pirates improve to 17-5 overall and 1-1 in AAC play and the Knights drop to 18-7 and 1-1 in league action.
How It Happened:
Trailing 4-3 heading into the eighth frame, the Pirates put up a season-high nine runs for a 12-4 advantage evening the series with the Knights. Washer tied the game at four-all hitting his second home run of the year, a solo shot to left field to start the frame. From there, four hits coupled with three UCF errors accounted for the next eight runs. With the bases loaded and one out, Nick Barber reached on an error scoring Brady Lloyd for the would-be game winning run. Bryant Packard followed by reaching on a fielder's choice pushing across Chandler Jenkins and another miscue by the Knights allowed Seth Caddell to score. Turner Brown followed with a single to right loading the bases once again for Spencer Brickhouse, who reached on an error that plated Barber. Washer walked in his second at-bat of the frame and Litton cleared the bases with his third homer of the year – a grand slam – capping the scoring at 12-4. Logan Heiser staked UCF to an early 1-0 lead with a single up the middle platting Matthew Mika. Two runs in the fifth for the Knights extended the lead to 3-0 when Mika singled to left field and Heiser flied out to right. ECU tied the game at three-all with three runs in the sixth, which was highlighted by Caddell's two-out, two-RBI single that scored Litton and Lloyd. But the Knights regained the lead in the home half of the sixth on Chandler Robertson's RBI base knock back up the middle.

Godwin's Take:
"This was a great win for us. We didn't play particularly well tonight, but we were able to capitalize on some of their miscues. Washer had a big hit that I though energized us with the home run that tied it in the eighth, then we just took what they gave us and were able to put up some runs. Jake (Agnos) was terrific coming out of the bullpen shutting them down and was hitting his spots. I thought Caddell put together a good at-bat with his two RBI single in the sixth and Connor's home run in the eighth closed the door."
Â
Pirate Pitchers:
Jake Agnos (2-2) got the win out of the bullpen tossing three scoreless frames where he allowed a pair hits, one walk and five strikeouts. Starter Chris Holba worked just 3.1 innings surrendering one run (earned) on six hits with four walks and one strikeout. Ryan Ross (1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 Rs, 2 BBs) and Davis Kirkpatrick (1.1 IP, 2 Hs, 1 R) bridged the gap from Holba to Agnos.
Â
Knights Staff:
Bryce Tucker (0-2) took the loss giving up five runs (one earned) on two hits with a pair of walks and one strikeout in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen. Starter Chris Williams worked six full frames surrendering three runs (all unearned) on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Garrett Westberg (0.1 IP, 2 Hs, 4 Rs, 1 BB) and Jeffrey Hakanson (1.1 IP, 0 Rs, 1 BB, 3 Ks) also worked out of the bullpen.
Â
ECU's Bats:
Seven Pirates recorded hits on the night with Lloyd (three) and Brickhouse (two) each registering multiple base knocks. Litton (four) and Caddell (two) each drove in multiple runs with Brickhouse, Lloyd, Packard and Washer adding one. Washer scored three time in the contest while Litton and Lloyd each crossed home twice. Washer (solo) and Litton (grand slam) both hit home runs coming in the eighth frame.
