No. 16 ECU Drops Series Opener To No. 18 Wichita State, 14-3
March 29, 2018 | Baseball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Alec Bohm hit a pair of home runs and drove in six runs, while Codi Heuer allowed two runs over five innings helping No. 18 Wichita State (19-4, 1-0) to a 14-3 American Athletic Conference opening series win over No. 16 ECU (18-6, 2-2) Thursday night at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
How It Happened:
Wichita State scored a run in eight of nine frames to capture its first-ever AAC win, 14-3. The Shockers jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Bohm's sixth home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center, in the first inning. ECU answered with a run of its own in the home half of the first when Bryant Packard belted his fourth homer of the season on the first pitch of the frame to right-center. Wichita State took the lead for good in the second on Gunnar Troutwine's single down the left field line that plated Trey Vickers for a 2-0 lead. From there, the Shockers scored two runs in the third, fourth and fifth frames for an 8-1 lead before Packard's sac fly to left field pushed across Andrew Henrickson making it a six-run game, 8-2. But Wichita State scored one in the sixth, two in the eighth and three in the ninth while the Pirates plated one in the home half of the ninth to cap the scoring.
Godwin's Take:
"We couldn't put them away tonight. We didn't execute pitches and you have to give a lot of credit to them. They are the best offensive team we have faced this year and when we made mistakes, they made us pay for it. We couldn't bring anybody out of the bullpen that had an answer for them, so we will need to be better on the mound tomorrow. We also need to be better offensively and a tick better defensively if we plan on winning."
Pirate Pitchers:
Trey Benton (4-3) suffered his second-straight loss in conference play allowing four runs (all earned) on six hits with one strikeout in two-plus innings of work. The Pirates used six arms out of the bullpen in Alec Burleson (1.2 IP, 2 Hs, 2 Rs, 1 K), West Covington (0.1 IP, 1 H, 2 Rs), Matt Bridges (1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K), Zach Barnes (1.1 IP, 4 Hs), Austin Covers (0.1 IP, 3 Hs, 2 Rs, 1 K) and Sam Lanier (1.2 IP, 3 Hs, 3 Rs, 1 K).
Shockers Staff:
Heuer (5-0) allowed two runs (both earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk over five frames. Wichita State got relief outings from Keylan Killgore (2.0 IP, 2 Hs, 2 Ks), Clayton McGinness (1.0 IP) and Robby Evans (1.0 IP, 2 Hs, 1 R, 1 K).
ECU Bats:
The Pirates pounded out 10 hits in the contest for the 11th time this season. Packard led the way with three hits and drove in a pair, while Spencer Brickhouse and Brady Lloyd each added two hits. Jake Washer drove in a run with a double in the ninth. Turner Brown, Henrickson and Packard all scored a run for ECU on the night.
Player-of-the-Game:
Packard went 3-for-3 on the night with a pair of RBI and scored one run. The sophomore hit his fourth home run of the season (fifth career) to lead off the game. His three hits tied a season high and was hit eighth multi-hit game of the year, while his two RBI pushed his multi-RBI total to six on the year. With the home run, he has hit round trippers in consecutive games (had one at No. 20 UCF in game three of the series – also in the opening frame).
