GREENVILLE, N.C. – For the fifth year running, the ECU track and field program will host the Bill Carson Invitational at the Minges Family Field at Bate Foundation Track & Field Facility. The meet is scheduled for April 6-7 and the visiting contingent is comprised of Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, Troy and The Citadel. Â
Â
Admission for the event is free of charge. Friday features the men's and women's hammer, javelin and discus events starting a 10 a.m. while the bulk of the meet is scheduled to begin Saturday at 11 a.m. with the women's pole vault.
Â
"We are always excited to host this meet each and every year," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft stated. "As I have stated numerous times, this gives our student-athletes a chance to compete in front of our home fans, administration and their families. We have won this meet the last two years and our goal remains the same - it is to keep both trophies at home. Both teams are coming into our home meet with a lot of energy and enthusiasm from last weekend's Raleigh Relays.
Â
Both the Pirate men and women have captured the team titles the last two years. The women set a meet record for team points in 2017, pulling away from the field early and racking up 281.5 to out-distance Charlotte who scored 141.5 points. The men netted 200 points to Troy's 138.
Â
Last weekend, ECU traveled to NC State for the Raleigh Relays and set a pair of school records along with turning in numerous top-10 finishes.
Â
Freshman Sommer Knight claimed fifth place in the pole vault invitational event, producing a school-record mark of 3.95 meters. She now owns the indoor and outdoor school records in pole vault. Additionally, junior Grace Sullivan smashed her personal record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, running a 10:26.02 - good for the program record and the top time in the American Athletic Conference this season.
