GREENVILLE, N.C. – ECU Head Men's Basketball Coach Joe Dooley has been selected to serve as a court coach at the 2018 USA Basketball Men's U18 National Team Training Camp.
Â
Dooley, Notre Dame coach Mike Brey, Midland coach Oliver Drake and Richard Bland College coach Chuck Moore were selected to assist the USA U18 coaching staff led by Kansas coach Bill Self along with Dayton coach Anthony Grant and Wake Forest coach Danny Manning. Training camp for the U18 National Team will commence from May 31 to June 2 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Â
"These four coaches bring winning traditions and a wealth of experience with them along to the 2018 USA U18 training camp, and the committee is confident they will be a tremendous help to the USA coaching staff and to all of the athletes in attendance," said Purdue coach Matt Painter, chair of the USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team Committee.
Â
Training camp is expected to feature 33 athletes overall, and finalists for the team are expected to be announced on June 2. The 2018 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Men will be held June 10-16 in St. Catharines, Canada, and the top four finishing teams will qualify for the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup for Men.
Â
Named ECU's head basketball coach on April 4, Dooley will be taking part in his first USA Basketball training camp.
Â
"It's an honor to be associated with USA Basketball and to be able to work with these talented young men as a member of the coaching staff," Dooley said. "I feel very privileged to have been asked to be a part of the training camp staff for USA Basketball this summer."
Â
Dooley spent 10 years (2003-13) at Kansas as an assistant coach under Self, working alongside Manning during nine of those seasons.
Â
"It'll be great to have the band back together," Dooley said. "There is a great sense of familiarity with those guys. I'm very excited about this opportunity both professionally and personally."
Â
Prior to being hired at ECU, Dooley spent five seasons as the head coach at Florida Gulf Coast University, where he compiled a 114-58 record (.663) and led his teams to postseason play in all five seasons. He led FGU to three Atlantic Sun Conference regular season championships, two conference tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2016 and 2017. FGU won 21 or more games every season under Dooley, and he was named Atlantic Sun Coach-of-the-Year in 2017 and 2018 and the NABC District III Coach of the Year in 2017.
Â
Dooley previously served as the Pirates' head coach from 1995-98 and compiled a 57-52 record after serving as an assistant coach at ECU from 1991-95.
Â
As the recognized governing body for basketball in the U.S. by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), USA Basketball is responsible for the selection, training and fielding of USA national teams that compete in FIBA-sponsored international competitions.
