May 03, 2018 | Men's Golf
GREENVILLE, N.C. --- ECU sophomore golfers Patrick Stephenson and Blake Taylor have been named to the 2018 American Athletic All-Conference Team the league announced Thursday afternoon. With the duos selection, the Pirates have had a least one representative on the yearly team since joining The American beginning with the 2014-15 season.
Â
"It is fantastic to have both Blake and Patrick named all-conference this season," ECU Head Coach Andrew Sapp said. "These two young men worked very hard this year and showed great improvement from their freshman seasons to earn this honor as sophomores. The exciting thing is that they have two more years left in their careers here at ECU and have great potential to improve even more. This is a great achievement for Blake and Patrick, and for Pirate Golf!"
Â
Stephenson led the Pirates with a season strokes per round average of 72.70, nearly two strokes fewer than his freshman scoring average of 74.50 and tied for ninth-lowest in school history. He recorded his lone Top 10 finish of the season by tying for first at the 2018 ECU Intercollegiate. Stephenson placed in the Top 20 in seven of 11 events with four Top 15 finishes. He shot par or better in 14 rounds with a season-low 5-under-par 67 during the second round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
Â
Taylor finished second on the team with 72.76 strokes per round with two Top 10 finishes. He tied for fifth at the Stitch Intercollegiate with a 54-hole total of 9-under-par 207, which included a second round 65. His other Top 10 finish was seventh-place at the season-opening Wolf Run Intercollegiate. Taylor had for Top 10 finishes in all with 13 rounds shooting par or better.
USF's Claudio Correa garnered American Player-of-the-Year accolades, while SMU's Mac Meissner was named Freshman-of-the-Year and USF's Steve Bradley was voted the Coach-of-the-Year.
