
Baseball Earns Third-Straight ABCA Academic Excellence Award

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The ECU baseball team was one of 48 Division I programs to receive the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award the association announced Wednesday.

The Pirates, who sported program-best 3.47 GPA for the 2017-18 academic year, are one of four American Athletic Conference teams to be honored joining Memphis, Tulane and Wichita State. ECU has registered a 3.05 or higher grade point average in seven of eight semesters, including a team-best 3.52 in the Fall of 2017 besting the previous mark of 3.42 (Fall 2015).

Under fourth-year head coach Cliff Godwin, a two-time Academic All-America selection, nearly 125 student-athletes have been named to the ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll, while over 50 Pirates have earned inclusion on The American All-Academic Team maintaining a minimum 3.00 GPA.

For the third-straight year, ECU took home the ABCA and American Team Academic Excellence Award. In 2017, two of Godwin's players (Travis Watkins/first-team and Charlie Yorgen/third-team) earned CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades, while last year Jake Agnos was a Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 First-Team selection.

In the Fall of 2017, all 35 members of the club posted a 3.52 cumulative GPA with 33 earning ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll accolades. The Pirates posted a 3.43 GPA in the Spring of 2018 with 30 being named to ECU Honor Roll.
