
Pirates Open Indoor Season In Chapel Hill

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The ECU track and field program kicks off a new season Saturday at the Dick Taylor Carolina Cup inside Eddie Smith Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of North Carolina.

The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. with the men's pole vault and men's distance medley relay occurring simultaneously.

"We are very excited to kick off our season this weekend," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "It's always fun to compete against your in-state rivals and see how you measure up against the rest of the state."

The Pirates return seven all-conference performers from last year's American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, including defending weight throw champion Ryan Davis.

The women look to break into the top three at the league's indoor meet this season after finishing fourth in 2018. The men took eighth place.

"I have told our teams that it is very important that we get off to a good start," Kraft added. "The indoor season goes very quickly, so we have to take advantage of every opportunity that we can. It will be very interesting to see how we perform this weekend given the big layoff for the holidays."
