Pirates Swept In Dual Meet At South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. --- The ECU men's and women's swimming and diving teams each lost to host South Carolina in a dual meet at the Carolina Natatorium/ Blatt PE Center on Saturday.
The ECU men lost, 180-120, to drop to 3-2 this season, and the Pirates' women's squad fell, 185-100, and are now 3-3 overall. Â The teams are back in action Saturday, Jan. 19, when they host UMBC for their final dual meet of season at Minges Natatorium starting at 1 p.m.
"Tough meet against a good team," Pirate head coach Matthew Jabs said. "We had some really good performances today both in the pool and on the boards. We're looking forward to being home next weekend for our final dual meet of the year."
The Pirate men's team collected four individual victories. Magnus Andersen touched 0.08 in front of teammate Tristan Taylor to win the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 50.44. Gavin Erdmann finished first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.01, 0.18 ahead of South Carolina's Dylan Delaney. Marek Osina claimed first-place in the 200-yard backstroke by 0.41 ahead of Anderson. Jacek Arentewicz captured the Pirates' win of the meet, touching first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:00.28).
ECU posted runner-up finishes in five events, led by newcomer Lyubomir Epitropov who placed second in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke.
South Carolina stood atop the podium in each of the 16 women's events, but ECU claimed 11 runner-up finishes. Catherine Johnson (50 free, 100 free), Shannon Stott (200 free, 200 fly), Marianna Vignoli (500 free, 1000 free) and Lily West (100 breast, 200 breast) each captured second-place in two events.
Following their final home meet against UMBC, the Pirates will wrap up the regular season at the Nike Cup Invitational in early February before competing in the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championships later in the month.
