School Record Performance Highlights Indoor Track Opening Weekend

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Sophomore pole vaulter Sommer Knight recorded a school-record mark in her event this weekend as the ECU track and field program kicked off its indoor season at the Dick Taylor Carolina Cup at the Eddie Smith Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of North Carolina.

In addition to the Pirates, the strong field featured a pair of North Carolina-based Atlantic Coast Conference programs in Duke, Wake Forest and the host Tar Heels.

"Both teams were very excited to get a meet under their belts," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "After training all fall it was really nice to see some really good performances to start the Indoor season. Without question, the highlight of the meet was Sommer Knight breaking her previous school record in the pole vault. We had numerous personal best throughout both teams."

Knight put up a mark of 4.00 meters to take second place. Her previous best was a 3.99-meter effort last year during her rookie campaign. Knight is currently tied for the conference lead with Rebekah Markel from Tulane.

Senior Courtney Warner also enjoyed a strong season debut, capturing first place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.52. She then teamed up with D'Nia Freeman, Shellbi Chapman and Naomi Whitaker to win the 4x400 relay in a time of 3:49.14 (3:46.14 converted).

In the 3,000-meter run, freshman Anna Bristle ended up in third place by crossing the finish line in 10:03.09 (9:57.97 converted). She entered the track season following an all-conference showing in cross country.

On the men's side, Hakeem Horton and Tamarck Bolden went third and fourth in the 60-meter dash with respective times of 7.05 and 7.08. Ethan Hageman and Andrew Ciaccia also put up the fourth and fifth-fastest American Conference times in the 3,000, posting converted marks of 8:38.71 and 8:41.44.

ECU is back in action next weekend at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.

"We have to take the momentum that we created today and build on this for the remainder of the indoor season," Kraft added. "We have to have a great week of practice and get ready for Virginia Tech next weekend."
