GREENVILLE, N.C. – After opening its indoor campaign last weekend in Chapel Hill, the ECU track and field programs head up to the Commonwealth of Virginia for the Hokie Invitational scheduled for Jan. 18-19 inside the Rector Fieldhouse on the campus of Virginia Tech.
Â
The meet begins Friday at 4 p.m. with the women's unseeded pole vault event and closes Saturday at 4 p.m. with the men's 4x400 relay.
Â
The highlight of opening weekend occurred in the field as sophomore Sommer Knight set a new school standard in the pole vault by clearing 4.00 meters. That performance propelled her into the American Athletic Conference lead as well as put her 30th nationally.
Â
"We are really looking forward to our meet this weekend," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "This gives us a chance to go up against some really good Atlantic Coast Conference competition early in the season. I explained to both teams that it's very important that we continue to get better each and every week. We have to be ready to compete every time we step on the track. Hopefully we can continue to build on the momentum of last week's results."
Â
On the men's side, freshman Ethan Hageman and senior Andrew Ciaccia rank fourth and fifth in the AAC in the 3,000-meter run. Senior Evan McCracken also sits high on the league performance list having recorded the second-longest throw in the shot put.
Â
Senior Courtney Warner is setting up to be an all-conference contender once again in the 60-meter dash as her season-opening time of 7.52 is fifth in the conference. Freshman Mackenzie Whitaker and senior Kourtney Edwards-Campbell are fourth in their respective events – the long jump and weight throw. Additionally, freshman Anna Bristle is fifth in the 3,000m.
Â
In addition to the Pirates and host Hokies, Duke, NC State, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, Tennessee, Florida (throwers), Radford, Liberty, Charlotte, Elon, North Carolina A&T, Winthrop and Roanoke College will compete this weekend.
