GREENVILLE, N.C. – With both teams desperately needing a win, the ECU women's basketball team travels to take on Temple on Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia, Pa.
Â
ECU (10-8, 1-4) saw its upset bid of co-conference leader UCF come up just short on Wednesday night inside Minges Coliseum. The Pirates outscored the Knights 25-15 in the fourth quarter, including a three-pointer by Justice Gee with less than 10 seconds remaining to force overtime. ECU ran out of gas in the extra period though, getting outscored 5-2 to fall 61-58. Lashonda Monk was the top performer for ECU, pouring in a career-high 27 points to go with eight steals and 10 free throws in 40 minutes of action.
Â
Monk is now ECU's leader in scoring this season, averaging 13.5 points overall and 16.8 points during conference games. The sophomore guard leads the conference and is third in the country in steals per game, averaging 4.18. The Pirates are second in the AAC in blocked shots, averaging 4.0 per game and lead the league in steals, averaging 11.9. Destiny Campbell is second in the league in blocked shots, averaging 1.44 per game. The Pirates' leading rebounder is Raven Johnson, who averages 6.5 per game while Monk has a team-best 53 assists.
Â
Temple (4-14, 0-5 AAC) is still looking for its first win of 2019 and has lost seven straight games. The Owls are coming off a 71-62 loss at neighboring Penn on Wednesday night. The Owls are led by Alliya Butts and Mia Davis, both of whom were named to the All-AAC Preseason Season Team. Davis leads the team in scoring (17.6 ppg) and rebounding (8.2 rpg). Butts is second on the team in scoring (13.6 ppg) and is fourth in the conference in assists (4.3 apg). During their 0-5 start in conference games, Temple has struggled on the glass and is getting out rebounded by 10.4 boards per game and are allowing 73.4 points, the worst mark in the AAC.
Â
The two schools met for the first time when ECU joined the AAC in 2014-15 and in the six meetings since, Temple holds a 5-1 advantage. Last season, Temple came to Minges Coliseum and left with a 65-64 win as the Owls made a free throw with less than seven seconds remaining to take the lead. ECU's only win in the series came during the 2015 AAC Championship. The Pirates are 0-2 all-time in Philadelphia, with the most recent result being a 78-47 loss in Jan. 2017.
