GREENVILLE, N.C. It will be the first rematch of the season for the ECU women's basketball team when the Pirates travel to Wichita State on Tuesday night.
Â
ECU (10-9, 1-5) continued to struggle on the road, falling to Temple 84-62. The Pirates trailed by just six at halftime, but the Owls outscored ECU 25-13 in the third-quarter and scored 52 points in the second half to pull away. The bright spots in the loss were the play of Alex Frazier and Raven Johnson. Frazier finished with her second career double-double, scoring a career-high 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Johnson scored 18 points, making a career-high 10-of-12 free throws.
Â
Johnson and Lashonda Monk lead ECU in scoring, both averaging 13.2 points per game, with Johnson adding a team-best 6.5 rebounds per game. Monk's scoring jumps to 15.3 points in conference play. ECU has also seen the play of Frazier improve in conference games, with Frazier scoring 10.7 points against AAC opponents and averaging 6.2 rebounds. Monk leads the American with 4.1 steals per game, nearly double the second-highest average. Monk is fifth in the country in steals per game and her 74 steals are the ninth-highest single-season total in ECU history. As a team, ECU leads the conference with 11.8 steals per game and 22.1 turnovers forced, ranking 13th and 11th, respectively, in the country. Â Â
Â
Wichita State (8-11, 1-5) won its first conference game of the season to snap a five-game losing streak. The Shockers traveled to Tulane and left with a 62-44 win. Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage led the way with 16 points while Ashley Reid finished with 15. Carla Bremaud is the leading scorer for Wichita, averaging 9.7 points with Lozada-Cabbage right behind her, scoring 8.9 points. Lozada-Cabbage is the team's leading rebounder, pulling down 5.7 rebounds and Seraphine Bastin leads with 61 assists. The Shockers have struggled to hold onto the ball this season, turning it over 19.7 times a game, the second-highest total in the conference.
Â
ECU leads the all-time series between the two schools 2-0, but Tuesday will be the first time the Pirates travel to Wichita. Earlier this month, the Shockers came to Greenville with ECU claiming a 78-56 win. Monk led the Pirates with 23 points and five steals while Frazier also added 17 points. ECU outscored Wichita State 30-12 in the third quarter to pull away. Uncharacteristically for ECU, the Pirates lost the turnover battle 25-21 in the win, but did outrebound the Shockers 48-28.
