CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The top three doubles tandems for the ECU women's tennis team finished 6-3 to lead the way at the 49er Invite.

"Clearly the results are not what we want, but overall, I saw improvement in this event compared to our first tournament," said head coach Tom Morris. "Our team fought hard, and responded well throughout this tournament."

In singles, Michelle Ncube and Ho Chiao Hsia led the way for the Pirates. Ncube and Chiao both went 2-1, defeating opponents from Charleston Southern and LIU. Nastja Rettich, Sibel Tanik and Hanna Axelsson all left Charlotte with one singles win apiece.

In doubles, the top three duos each went 2-1 for the Pirates. Ncube and Rettich dropped their first match of the weekend, but bounced back to win two straight. Axelsson and Tanik continued their strong play as a pair, going 2-1 to improve their record to 5-1 together. Finally, Ho Chiao and Minette Van Vreden, who had started the season 1-2 together, picked up their play and won a pair of matches.

ECU will have a weekend off before heading to the ITA Carolina Regionals. The regional championships will get started on Thursday, Oct. 24 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
