Split Squad Weekend Up Next For Pirates
October 23, 2019 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The squad will split up between two tournaments this weekend as the ECU women's tennis will compete at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships and at the NC Central Invite.
Â
"Both events this weekend will allow our team very strong competition, with four teams ranked in the top-12 nationally," said head coach Tom Morris. "The strongest players in our region (and nation) will be competing at the Carolina Regional hosted at Wake Forest, while players who did not qualify for that tournament will play at the NC Central event. We know we will see some great tennis and look forward to a solid weekend for our team at both tournaments!"
Â
Four Pirates will head to Wake Forest for the ITA Carolina Regional Championships. Lisa Hofbauer went 14-4 on the top court last year for ECU, but has started slowly this season and is just 0-2 in singles. Nastja Rettich (4-2) and Michelle Ncube (3-2) have the best singles ledgers for ECU so far and will also play doubles together, having gone 4-2 as a duo. Rounding out the quartet will be Sibel Tanik. Tanik is 3-4 in her debut fall season. Hofbauer and Tanik will partner together for the first time on the doubles court as well.
Â
The remainder of the squad will compete at the NC Central Invite. Ho Chiao Hsia (3-3 this season) and Minette Van Vreden (1-5) will be looking to improve their recent play after each won at least 11 matches last year.
Â
Hanna Axelsson has struggled in singles play during her debut fall, going 1-5 there, but has been a dominant 5-1 on the doubles court. Victoria Dixon will be looking for her first singles win of the fall while Sofia Anthony will try to snap a three-match losing streak.
Â
In doubles, Minette and Hanna will partner together for the first time. Hsia and Dixon will also play together for the first time this year, although they did one match as a tandem in 2017-18.
Â
The ITA Carolina Regional Championships will start play on Thursday, Oct. 24 in Winston-Salem, N.C., while the NC Central Invite opens on Friday, Oct. 25 in Durham, N.C.
