Tanik, Hofbauer Win Draws At ECU Invite

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The fall season ended on a high note as the ECU women's tennis team won three draws at the ECU Invitational this past weekend.
"Overall, I believe this was a solid event for our team, and while there are many areas in which to improve, we have had a good fall season, and look forward to a very challenging spring schedule," said head coach Tom Morris. "Congratulations to Lisa and Sibel for winning both singles and doubles!"
Lisa Hofbauer had started her senior fall slow, but she showed why she was ECU's top singles player a year ago by cruising to three wins and a draw title. The Birkfeld, Austria native dropped only four games in her three victories, beating Charleston Southern's Zoe Cauthen, Elon's Victoria Saldh by walkover and finishing with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Elon's Alex Konaiev.
Sibel Tanik joined Hofbauer in winning her respective singles draw to bring her fall record to 8-6. After beating Elon's Olivia Archer and Charlotte's Margauex Maquet in straight sets, Tanik fell behind Charlotte's Emma Scott in the final. However, Tanik won the second set to force a tiebreaker where she cruised to a 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3) win. It was the first collegiate draw title for Tanik.
Tanik and Hofbauer not only won their singles titles, but also combined to go 3-0 as a doubles pairing. The duo won 18 of 22 games in their three matches, defeating a pair from NC Central and two tandems from Charlotte on the way to a draw title.
Hsia Ho Chiao and Victoria Dixon both narrowly missed grabbing singles titles of their own. Each reached the final of their respective draw, Chiao by defeating players from NC Central and Elon while Dixon topped opponents from NC Central and Charleston Southern, before bowing out.
The Pirates will be back in action in the spring for their dual match season. That schedule will be released later this fall.
