Pirates Drop Season Opener At No. 8 NC State
January 20, 2020 | Women's Tennis
RALEIGH, N.C. – Starting the season against the No. 8 team in the country, the ECU women's tennis team battled, but fell to NC State 7-0 on Monday evening in the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
"Overall, I thought we played hard and played well," said head coach Tom Morris. Â "We gave them some close matches in singles and were serving to win the doubles point. I'm disappointed we couldn't come through in some of those matches, but it was a good match to play at this point in the season. If we can stay healthy and keep working hard, we can be alright. NC State is No.8 in the country and we had real chances to win some points today, we just couldn't get there."
ECU falls to 0-1 on the young season while NC State improves to a perfect 6-0.
The Pirates came about as close as they could to claiming the doubles point. NC State took an early lead when Anna Rogers and Lana Mavor topped Michelle Ncube and Nastja Rettich 6-2 on court two. ECU answered through Alisa Diercksen and Minette Van Vreden, who paired together to beat Liz Norman and Dylan Cannon 6-3 on court three.
With the doubles point coming down to court one, ECU had a golden chance to take an early lead. Lisa Hofbauer and Sibel Tanik had battled with the nation's No. 22 doubles tandem, Jaeda Daniel and Adriana Reami, for 11 games and had a 6-5 lead with the chance to serve for the match. Unfortunately, the Pirates dropped a tight game to send it to a tiebreaker where NC State pulled out the 7-6 win to clinch the opening point.
ECU could not get the same momentum going in singles play. NC State won all four of the opening sets to take command of the match. Reami, the 23rd-ranked singles player, closed out a 6-1, 6-0 win over Diercksen on court two followed by Norman beating Tanik 6-2, 6-1 on court four to put NC State on the brink of clinching.
The Wolfpack clinched the match through No. 18 Anna Rogers, who beat Hofbauer 6-4, 6-1 on the top court.
Ncube came close to getting ECU on the scoreboard. The sophomore was matched up with Daniel on court three and in each of the first two sets, Ncube and Daniel were knotted at 4-4. However, each time Daniel was able to claim the final two games to take a 6-4, 6-4 win.
Like Ncube, Rettich had a chance to take the first set, but just could not get over the hump. Rettich led Mavor 5-4 in the opening stanza, but Mavor won three straight games to take a one-set lead. Mavor closed out the match in the second set, winning 7-5, 6-4.
The final singles match of the day was the only one to go to a third set. It looked like Van Vreden would not be able to keep up with Marta Gonzalez after Gonzalez won the opening set 6-2. But Van Vreden rallied to win the second set 6-2 and force the third set tiebreaker. The tiebreaker was tied at 7-7 before Gonzalez pulled away to win 6-2, 2-6,
10-8.
ECU will be back in action for a pair of matches this weekend. First up will be a Friday afternoon match at VCU. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m., at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.
