GREENVILLE, N.C. – A season-opening four-game homestand will come to an end on Sunday as the ECU women's basketball team hosts Charlotte in Minges Coliseum.
Â
ECU (1-2) will be trying to bounce back from a 78-68 loss to William & Mary by tightening up its defense. The Pirates have thrived at turning teams over, forcing 28 per game, which is ninth in the country. Lashonda Monk (4.67 steals per game) is tied for 11th in the NCAA in steals while Dominique Claytor (3.67) is tied for 33rd and as a team, ECU is fifth with 16.7 steals. However, if teams do get a shot off, they are shooting 45.3%, a mark that ranks last in the AAC. On the offensive end, Taniyah Thompson has showed why she finished her prep career as Hamden's all-time leading scorer. Thompson has scored in double figures in all three games and is averaging 17.7 points. Monk is right behind her with 16.7 points while Raven Johnson is averaging 13.0 points. Johnson is just short of averaging a double-double as she is grabbing a team-high 9.7 rebounds per game.
Â
Charlotte (2-0) will head east for a pair of games this weekend. Before taking on ECU on Sunday, the 49ers will travel to Wake Forest on Friday night. The 49ers have opened their season with wins over Gardner-Webb and Richmond with a combined margin of 22 points. Four players are scoring in double figures, led by Octavia Jett-Wilson's 16.5 points and Jade Phillips' 16.0 points per game. Phillips is also leading Charlotte in rebounding, averaging 10.5 boards a night. Charlotte has been particularly accurate from the field, shooting 51.3% from the floor to rank 14th in the country, while holding opponents to just 30.4% shooting, which is 23rd in the NCAA. The 49ers were picked to finish sixth in the C-USA Preseason Poll, four spots behind Middle Tennessee, who has already come to Minges Coliseum this season.
Â
Charlotte has long dominated the series between the two schools, as the Pirates have just a 10-25 record against the 49ers. However, it has been much more evenly matched since 2009, when the teams met for the first time since Charlotte first left Conference USA. In those six matchups, each team is 3-3 and the home team has won every game. Last season, Charlotte won a close 52-46 contest despite a career-high 12 points from Justice Gee. In 2017, ECU claimed a 58-55 win in Minges Coliseum as Necole Hope scored a team-high 15 points. In the series, the Pirates are 8-10 at home against the 49ers. Â
