Pirates Take On Wake Forest

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Riding a two-game winning streak, the ECU women's basketball team will take on in-state foe Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon in LVJM Coliseum.
ECU (3-4) has bounced back from a 1-4 start with wins over Maryland Eastern Shore and at Longwood. The battle at Longwood came down to the wire, but ECU's defensive pressure and three Lashonda Monk free throws helped the Pirates escape with a 64-61 win. Monk leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.6 points and her 27 steals are tied with Dominique Claytor for both the team lead and for the most in the country. Claytor has provided contributions in a variety of areas, as she has grabbed a team-best 43 rebounds, including averaging 9.3 rebounds over the past three games, as well as handing out 17 assists. Taniyah Thompson is second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.9 points per game as well as averaging 33.7 minutes, which ranks 33rd in the NCAA. As a team, ECU's 103 steals per game ranks second in the country, while the Pirates are also in the top-10 in the nation in turnovers forced (26.43, fifth), turnover margin (+11.00, fifth) and steals per game (14.7, seventh). Â
Wake Forest (3-3) snapped a two-game losing streak by beating Elon 69-57. The game at Elon ended a two-game road trip for the Demon Deacons who will return home to the LVJM Coliseum, where they are 2-2 this season. Ivana Raca leads Wake Forest in scoring, averaging 15.2 points while she is is second on the team in rebounding, grabbing 6.7 rebounds. Alex Sharp has been the team's best rebounder, hauling in 8.5 boards and scoring 13.2 points per night. Also scoring in double figures is Gina Conti who is averaging 10.0 points and a team-best 4.3 assists. The Demon Deacons have been one of the best rebounding teams in the country, with their rebounding margin of +15.3 ranking ninth in the NCAA.
The all-time series between the two schools is 7-3 in favor of ECU. The two teams met in 2018, the first meeting since 2004. In that game, ECU fell behind early, but rallied with a huge second half to win 70-61 at home. Monk led ECU with 25 points and nine steals while Raven Johnson had 24 points. The Pirates forced 35 Wake Forest turnovers and scored 29 points off those turnovers. ECU is 2-1 all-time when playing in Winston-Salem, winning in January of 1982 and 2004 while losing in December of 1982. Against ACC opponents, the Pirates are 37-75 all-time, going 1-1 last season.
